Hi Friends,
It’s that time of year when everyone starts to get out of town for summer vacation. School’s out (or nearly). The weather’s warming up. And destinations more distant than “down the block” are calling. The thing is, you still have to get wherever you’re going, and the getting there is often the most grueling part. You may have—at some childless point in your life—imagined how difficult it might be to travel with children, but no one one ever tells you just how insane it will be. No one says, for instance, “You’ll never watch a movie or listen to music or zone out or work or sleep or use the bathroom at your leisure on a flight for the rest of your natural life.”
While traveling with children is inherently challenging, we all know that bringing an absolute abundance of snacks is one of the few surefire ways to survive it. With that, this week’s newsletter contains three new recipes for nutrient-dense, portable, room temperature-stable snacks to pack with you on all the planes/trains/automobiles (we’ve also included a few off-the-shelf snack options we like and trust). You’ll notice a common theme—seeds, nuts and citrus zest—but we made an effort to develop recipes that are both savory and sweet and diverse in flavor.

We also suggest you consider making these savory muffins, these mini frittatas, these multigrain onigiri, the roasted pimentón chickpeas from the Wedge Salad recipe in this post, or the banana cookies, crackers and sweet potato balls from this snack-focused post if you’ve got upcoming travel with—or without—children.
BONUS: And, just because, we’ve rounded up the toys we’ve found most indispensable when it come to keeping babies and toddlers preoccupied in confined, moving vehicles.
Godspeed,
Fanny + Greta
